The secret to grinding high speed steel is to remember that HSS is abrasion and heat resistant. These two properties make it resistant to grinding. A grinding wheel is a cutting tool and the abrasive grains are in effect its cutting teeth. If the abrasive grains are dull from use they wear more then they cut causing friction thus heating the tool.

It makes perfect sense that if a wheel type works on a surface grinding machine for a HSS application it would work on a pedestal type grinder. A "K" hardness is not what I would use on my SG. I use "H" and "J" wheels, but for this use it makes sense. As you stated, finding the correct size wheel was the problem which is now solved.

For hand held roughing of HSS I use a wheel with 46 grit in the I hardness. On a 6-inch grinder at 3450 RPM use the 7 x 1/2 inch wheels. These are 1 ¼ bore wheels so you will need to make a spacer and you could have some guard issues but I assure you …

Do almost all your grinding on a coarser wheel: it cuts quicker and cooler. Buy a wheel dresser and keep the wheels dressed. A 6" wheel is fine (you'll want a slower grinder for 8" wheels). You kinda have to get a feel for the actual grinding, but the only hard part is re-acquiring the same angle after taking a tool off the wheel to examine it.

Grinding wheels for HSS. I recently acquired a Delta Carbide Tool grinder, 1/2 hp, 3450 rpm. It came with silicaon carbide plate-mounted wheels that I want to replace with aluminum oxide as I only use HSS toolbits, no carbide. My choices in plate-mounted wheels (which will let me use the nice toolrests) are limited to Norton 38A and 32A.

After many hours of researching. I had reached the conclusion that I needed a CBN wheel for grinding HSS in my surface grinder. I contacted a company called Eagle Superabrasives. They specialize in CBN and Diamond wheels. They agreed a CBN wheel is what I need for grinding HSS however felt my machine was lacking with only a 1hp spindle.

The result is a constantly dull wheel that grinds very poorly and hot. Friability is not only preferable, but mandatory for grinding HSS. One must achieve a balance of hardness to keep the wheel grinding properly, without losing the form of the wheel prematurely. Friability is the hardness of the wheel, and is not related to abrasive type.

The sources I have tried, ENCO and Mc Master Carr list wheels but only for grinding carbide. Norton seems to be the big supplier of grinding wheels but they only list a diamond wheel at around $160.00 and I do not know if that will work on HSS. Secondly the price is a lot more than I am willing to spend.
