I tried plaster, but basically a plaster mold works for one use only. I make my molds out of wood. For smiling bill jigs, I drill the mold; for most I shape the wood with a dremel tool. The wood lasts for about 10-15 castings. I can make 2 or 3 molds in less than 1/2 hour and can pour about 30 jigs with these molds.

You can either use Plaster of Paris or potter's plaster. Plaster of Paris is often a bit cheaper, but Pottery Plaster no. 1 is harder and more durable. If you use potter's plaster your plaster mold will weather bumps and knocks in your studio more successfully. But Plaster of Paris is fine too.

Posted April 12, 2010 · Report post. I've been playing with several liquids to seal Plaster Of Paris. Water Thinned out Elmers Glue, Ace Epoxy, Flexcoat Epoxy, and Devcon. All have pluses and minus after sealing and pouring. Devcon 20-30 minute, thinned out with some drops of acetone, has held up the best for me and has a brilliant shine.

I use Patching plaster & buy it at my local hardware store in 35# bags. Sells for $11.00 a bag at Ace. It drys slow. So, if you want to carve it you have time. I also crumple up heavyduty tinfoil in a cup mold & fill it w/this plaster. makes good strong boulders. I use an aluminum screen stapled to plywood forms for my mountains, streams & hills.
