Around one-third of Kangaroo Island is covered in national park, which provides a natural environment for all kinds of wildlife. One experience not to be missed when visiting Kangaroo Island is seeing the sea lions at Seal Bay. Kangaroo Island is one of the most amazing places to visit in South Australia and one of the reasons to visit Seal Bay is the wildlife is amazing.

Kangaroo Island Day 11: Caves, rocks and more seals. A major excursion day. We started at Kelly Hill Caves. These are quite spectacular limestone caves. The "show cave" area is not huge, but it is large enough to showcase quite a number of wonders. Caves really are cool. Also the guide was really good.

Fur Seals on Kangaroo Island. The more common type of seal to find on Kangaroo Island is the Long nosed seal / New Zealand Fur Seal. There are a few different names of this species between the two countries, which is a little confusing. There are two distinct fur seal species found in Australia but they are very hard to differentiate for me.

Seal Bay. On the south coast of Kangaroo Island. Seal Bay sits just west of the Cape Gantheaume Conservation Park along the south coast of Kangaroos Island. It is easily accessible via Seal Bay Road, a sealed road that runs south off of South Coast Road. The main draw of the area is the Seal Bay Conservation Park.

Kangaroo Island is Australia's third-largest island, measuring 145km (90 miles) east to west and 55km (34 miles) north to south at it's widest point, totalling 4409km² (1702miles²) in area.

The penguin colonies on Kangaroo Island and Granite Island have shown a marked decline in recent years, though research has been unable to attribute this decline to any single cause. Fur seals are known to eat penguins, but they typically form a minor part of a seal's diet.

Some seals can also move quickly overland and may bite if harassed. Some of the best places where organised viewing of seals takes place include Seal Bay on Kangaroo Island, Montague Island on the New South Wales South Coast, Seal Rocks in Victoria, various places in Tasmania and on accessible islands around Perth and Albany in Western Australia.

The sea at this western end of Kangaroo Island is a major pathway for seals, whales, dolphins and sharks and is part of the migration route of the highly prized Bluefin Tuna. There are 6 kinds of marine mammals associated with Kangaroo Island. The Australian Sealions are found on the South coast. Guided tours take people into the heart of the colony of about 600 seals at Seal Bay National Park. The Australian and New Zealand Fur Seals can be seen at Admirals Arch near Cape du Couedic.

Long Nosed Fur Seals. Also known as New Zealand Fur Seals, you can find thousands at Admirals Arch within Flinder's Chase National Park. The colonies on Kangaroo Island are estimated at 100,000. With a dive depth range of up to 380 metres and reaching up to 250 kg, they prefer rocky coastlines and boulder style beaches.
