Washington County is one of 31 counties total in the United States named for Revolutionary War Commander in Chief and first President, George Washington. It was established in 1772 and was initially named Charlotte County, although the name was changed to its current one in 1784.

Washington County was the first county created by the Kentucky State Legislature and named for the first President, George Washington. Springfield, the county seat, straddles the old Wilderness Trace. Her hundred year-old buildings look down upon the modern US 150. Throughout the county are other relics of Washington County's long history.
