Remington Arms introduced the Remington Model Four in 1981, which was a redesign from the Remington Model 7400 autoloading rifle. This firearm is a semiautomatic, gas-operated action rifle, which automatically chambers ammunition from a detachable, four-round magazine after a trigger pull, but does not fire the round.

Concerning my new Remington 7400 in 30-06: Initially, the first 50 rounds produced jams every third round, so I went to work on it by bedding the action / stock / installing a LimbSaver Barrel De-Resonator / adjusting the trigger to 3 lbs., and dry-firing / working the action 1,000 times.

Reloads will break the extractors as well. Factory loads only. 150 grain to 180 don't go lighter or heavier. The 742 is the worst of the bunch stamped receiver and very prone to extractor breaking. The 7400 is not much better and the new 750 in junk. The best one was the original 740 built in …

When I reviewed the .30-06 Remington Model 798 rifle (see the Product Review Page), which is based on a commercial Mauser 98 barreled action made in Serbia, I commented that in many ways this was actually Remington's finest (although far from most expensive) hunting rifle. I also noted that it would make an excellent basis for a custom rifle.

Two main rifles caught my eye, a Remington Model 760 pump in .270 Win. and a Remington Model 740 autoloader in .30-06, complete with scope! Of course, the scope was a Bushnell (Pre Banner) 4x and the mount was a Weaver, but we figured it would do for deer hunting in the pine forests of central SC, where shots are usually less than 100 yards.

At the inception, the Remington model 740 semi-auto was named the Woodsmaster, and came with a 22" barrel with a detachable 4 shot box magazine, being introduced in 1955, three years AFTER it's companion, the 760 pump. This model 740 was probably only initially produced in 30-06.

When your Model Four was new, it wasn't exactly cheap to buy, as you know. The $400 you paid in 1980-81 had the same buying power then that $1,157.00 has today. Remington's gas operated semi-auto hunting rifles have pretty much always cost close to a grand in today's money.
