The key though is that the concrete was mixed well. As usual, let sit in a shaded area and mist with water during the curing stage. Once hardened, 24 hour or so, pull out of the molds. I soak mine for a couple days in a bucket of water to leach out any extra chemicals and further cure the concrete.

5. Pour 2 inches (5.1 cm) of the concrete mixture into the larger container. Poke the pieces of pipe into the concrete, with 3 to 4 inches (7.6 to 10.2 cm) between each pipe. Smooth the concrete around the pieces of pipe, but be sure not to cover the pipe, as the pipes must be left open to create the drainage holes.

Not sure how it will work but…hey, this is the first pot. The next step is to cover the pot with plastic. This will trap the moisture in and allow the concrete to cure more completely. It takes only 24 hours to cure enough for handling and removal from the mold. But that's tomorrow, I have some more ingredients to play with. Color!

Looking at the number of trees I have I will need a large amount of cush to buy pots, maybe something close to USD 50000. So until my bonsai look good enough to deserve a good pot, I shall make pots for them my self. At least something better than the present cement pots, cut off plastic pots, colanders, and all kinds of kitchen plastic ware.

We made our own concrete sink once! I found a cool trick to make it more "pretty" by gluing some glass stones in a pattern inside the mold first. Once it's completely dry you pour the concrete in and let it set. Once a day or two is gone by and its dry you break it out of the mold and wala! A super cool design.

Set the pot in a dry area to cure for one to two weeks at a temperature above 55 degrees F. Spray the pot with water two to three times a day to prevent cracking during the drying process. Remove the dowels from the cured pot. Leave the pot in the mold for an additional two weeks, then remove the mold.
