It is simply a short sluice with a bottom of one by 12 inch lumber, with 6-inch-high sides and a 1 to 1-1/2 inch end piece. To catch gold, the bottom of the box is covered with burlap, canvas, carpet, Astro-Turf, spaghetti mat or other suitable materials. The box is set with the feed end about waist high and the discharge end 6 to 12 inches lower.

I have moved up river 50 ft and had to change the angle. Here is a sure fire way to tell where your angle belongs. First off, you will have to move any larger rock through your sluice. If you classify your material (getting out the big stuff), you may be able to use less flow or angle. You have to understand that, the riffle is the catch.

I think using miners moss underneath your riffles is a real important item for capturing that fine gold. Good riffles and good under lining are more important than length. Some guys want to make a hand sluice too long - three or four feet of riffle area is plenty to do a good job if it is properly designed.

The way to tell if you have things close to right or not, is to notice whether you are finding gold many riffles down from the front of the sluice. It should be very close to the front, in the first 1/2 of the sluice for sure. One way to always know is to make the miners moss two sections, butted together. All the gold should be in the first mat.
