Sambhv's Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) plant uses coal-based technology for the production of sponge iron. The process includes the de-oxidisation of iron ore below the melting temperature of iron through the direct reduction process using high-grade iron ore and non-coking coal. The material used is iron ores lumps/pellets, Coal and Dolomite.

In the former process, iron ore is the main raw material. In an electric furnace, scrap iron is used and occasionally also sponge iron. Sponge is an intermediate product, which is produced from iron ore by means of direct reduction (= DRI or directly reduced iron) and that is then further reduced and smelted in an electric furnace.
