FORD TRACTOR STEERING. All N-Series Tractors - Ford-Ferguson 9N, 2N, and Ford 8N. Periodic lubrication of your steering box is much, much easier than disassembling it to replace the bearings, sectors, etc. The top bearing usually goes first because on many steering boxes it is hard to get lubricant to that bearing.

the draglinks were independently hooked to each wheel. The steering arms were attatched to sector gears inside the steering mechanism ( on the 8n and NAA ).. on the 9n/2n.. the sector gear and steering arm is 1 piece. The steering gear boxes on the 8N tractors came in two variations. These variations are best identified by the number of bolts attaching the adjuster plates to the base of the steering gear housing. Steering gear assemblies before s/n 216989 had 4 bolts holding the adjuster plates. The sector shafts stuck out through the center of these plates.

The 9N i work on has a distributor that only seats one way. The timing cannot be adjusted by turning the distributor, because the distributor just can't be turned. If the timing is right, then after turning the engine, it is wrong, then there is definately a situation of 2 gears not meshing or of a gear spining on its shaft.

Ford8N.com - Ford 8N & N Series Tractor Parts. August 17, 2014 ·. Transmissions Speeds & Rear Axle Oil Seal Sizes. Transmissions used in 9N and 2N tractors had 3 forward speeds. The oval-shaped gear shift cover was also part of the steering gear box. They have an outer axle seal with an outside diameter of 3.485", and is 0.665" thick.

There's a shot of the breakdown in one of these photos. The wear is mainly in complete bearing failure, top and bottom of the steering cam shaft (worm gear). The sector shaft is in pretty good shape but there is wear on the pins so I think I'll get the sector repair kit.

The non-integral refers to the box having no internal power assist and having no hydraulic lines connected to it.
