I just made a ash separator from 4"PVC and a sweep T and a vacuum cleaner. The ash gets dropped down a piece of 4 ' PVC and then the vacuum has to pull it back up. Only the dust and lighter stuff gets picked up and the heavy coal pieces fall to the bottom. I am presently doing rice coal but it should also work for the others.
