The vertical engine has gotten a bad wrap these days because of its "supposedly" unfriendly geometry. Being vertical, the drive shaft obviously sticks down and is not the easiest to convert to be a horizontal engine.Most vertical engines get abandoned.

01-12-2005, 07:38 AM. You can't turn a vertical shaft aircooled engine horizontal. The oil sump is in the bottom of a vertical engine for a reason. A go kart builder would be lucky to have at his/her disposal bevel gears salvaged from an old outboard motor to implement into the design of the go kart. A simpler solution to the problem involves the use of a simple belt and pulley system. The go kart builder would attach pulleys to the vertical engines drive shaft and to the axle of the go kart.

Connecting vertical shaft with a wheel will eat majority of power. Save yourself some hassle and buy an old motorbike. Three mounting points for an engine, one chain, two cables for throttle and clutch and one small linkage for gear shifting and you're good to go. Better concentrate on building a strong and comfortable frame.
