I grew up with hammer mills run by belt. We put a half twist on the belt to make the hammer mill run the correct direction. The hammer mills were stationary so using the old tracts made lining up pretty easy. My earliest memory was when Dad was using the JD 1929 D. He used a split "V" block of wood to hold the tractor back.

Hammer Mills. Hammer mills process the grain using either a series of swinging or stationary steel bars (hammers) to grind the grain. In most hammer mills, the hammers force the grain against a screen until the grain is the desired size and passes through the screen, but newer "screenless" models can use airflow instead of a screen to sort the grain that is the desired size.
