Mr. Vizinto is among the approximately 77,000 agricultural workers employed in South Africa's sugar industry. With 12 of the 14 sugar mills located in province of KwaZulu-Natal, this is the epicenter of sugar production. Because cane needs to be processed within 24 hours of harvesting, mills are located close to plantations.

When the cane was ripe, the enslaved workers cut the sugar cane by hand with large curved machetes and loaded the stems onto carts. Mills were slow and inefficient so during the harvesting season the slaves worked in the mill and boiling house 24 hours a day to process the crop. They worked under strict supervision by the European supervisors.

By 1911 the cane supply grew by 11000 tons of sugar. After the successful opening of the Amatikulu Sugar Mill, the Flixton Sugar Mill was established on the Mhlatuze River, having the capacity of 35 tons of cane per hour compared to the Amatikulu Sugar Mill, which produces about 30 tons of cane per hour.
