To identify gold inside of a piece of quartz, hold a magnet against the rock. If the quartz sticks to the magnet, then it contains iron pyrite, or fool's gold. You can also try to scratch a piece of glass or unglazed ceramic with the gold portion of the rock. Real gold will not scratch these substances.

If it is gold it will be malleable and easy to scratch. It will be easy to make a deep groove with little effort. If it is pyrite it will take more effort and will leave a crumbly scratch. If you have a rough porcelain plate or tile, try to streak the mineral on the plate. If it is gold it will leave a yellow streak.
