Nickel-focused Western Areas announces first ore production. Western Areas Ltd (ASX: WSA) announced today first ore production at its Odysseus project where nickel ore has been intersected at the Odysseus south orebody. Odysseus is an underground sulphide operation located in Western Australia with total reserves of 211k tonnes of nickel.

It is used for plating polished iron and steel goods, forming a coating little liable to rust and taking a good polish. The ores of nickel are not very common.

Global nickel resources averaging a minimum nickel grade of about 1% contain about 130 million tons of nickel, and the distribution between the nickel sulphides and nickel laterites is estimated to be approximately 40% and 60%, re-

It is both siderophile (i.e., associates with iron) and chalcophile (i.e., associates with sulfur). The bulk of the nickel mined comes from two types of ore deposits:
به خواندن ادامه دهیدTwo main types of nickel ores are extracted: (i) sulphide ores and (ii) laterite ores. Sulphides ores typically occur in underground deposits, which are drilled and blasted to extract the ore. Laterite deposits may be exploited in near-surface deposits, using earth-moving equipment. Mined nickel ore contains 0.5-3.5% of nickel.

In this study, nickel oxide–sulfide mixed ore concentrate was roasted with the addition of ammonium sulfate under a static air atmosphere, and the roasted products were leached by water, in order to evaluate the extraction of metals.

In cases of technogenic waste processing, the standard ore grade can be even lower. This can be explained by the fact that ore mining costs have been already spent, and transport expenses are allocated to the remediation budget [15].

It was found that both the grade and the sulphidation degree largely depended upon the temperature and the sulphur additions, with temperatures above 550oC exhibiting the highest nickel sulphidation extents and grades.
